A Metal Hammer compartilhou sua análise do álbum “Life Is But A Dream…” do Avenged Sevenfold, dando ao álbum 4 de 5 estrelas.

Loucura, com L(SD) maiúsculo. Em 2016, o Avenged Sevenfold lançou The Stage diretamente na cara do público, meio que de surpresa. O álbum é uma declaração ambiciosa de metal moderno, cheia de elementos progressivos, que colocou uma separação definitiva entre o passado e o futuro do A7X — algo que despertou a fúria e o desagrado de uma boa parte da base de fãs mais estabelecida da banda.

Enquanto muitos teriam pensado: “OK, fizemos nosso trabalho”, e voltado à normalidade, ou fingido demência e corrido de volta para o território musical seguro e conhecido, que tanto agrada aos fãs, com o rabo entre as pernas, o Avenged decidiu que queria mesmo pôr fogo no mundo e assistir de camarote. O oitavo álbum do quinteto é ainda mais insano, estranho, conceitual e — em certa medida — indigesto.

Life Is But A Dream… é uma obra pervertida e perturbada de psycho-metal, regada a doses cavalares de hardcore, hip hop, música eletrônica, jazz, funk, gospel e LSD líquido correndo pelas veias. Tudo se encaixa de forma a explorar temas sobre existencialismo e absurdo, conceitos que se aprofundam em questões sobre o significado da vida, a natureza da existência e a condição humana. Caleidoscópico, desorientador e destemido, este é o som de uma banda que está, verdadeiramente, cagando e andando para a opinião alheia.

Pelo menos, a coisa começa como um álbum de metal. A faixa de abertura, Game Over, tem uma introdução de guitarra clássica composta com delicadeza, até ser atropelada por riffs pesados e o vocal agressivo e old school de M. Shadows. O massacre continua até o barulho desaparecer em uma nuvem de psicodelia em cores primárias. “De repente, me dei conta de que aqui não é mais o meu lugar”, canta Shadows, ecoando os pensamentos de boa parte das pessoas ouvindo essa insanidade pela primeira vez.

O único elemento que define este álbum é essa sensação arraigada de inconformismo e a recusa em se encaixar em quaisquer normas predeterminadas. Pode esquecer qualquer estrutura previsível, a familiaridade de verso > refrão > verso.

A segunda faixa, Mattel — batizada com o nome da empresa responsável pela boneca Barbie —, faz uma crítica à superficialidade da vida moderna com uma mistura de muralhas de riffs, sintetizadores, solos de guitarra e um trecho que lembra uma canção de ninar. Nobody começa com um som como de uma sirene assustadora sendo arrancado a protestos de uma guitarra, uma atmosfera de terror que permeia toda a música, a não ser pelas partes em que o tecido da realidade se abre para dar lugar a harmonias vintage dignas da era de ouro do Queen.

O ataque continua com uma sequência de referências inesperadas. Beautiful Morning poderia, muito bem, ser uma — ótima — música não gravada do Alice in Chains, mas termina com um coda de piano ao melhor estilo de Billy Joel, enquanto os vocais sintetizados em vocoder de Easier parecem inspirados diretamente por Kanye West em 808s & Heartbreak, mas misturados com sons de fliperama dos anos 80 e um riff imenso e absolutamente crocante, para equilibrar.

Apesar de tudo isso, a maior influência vem das drogas, principalmente alucinógenas (M. Shadows e Synyster Gates chegaram a procurar a orientação de um xamã durante o processo de composição) e, como qualquer viagem induzida por esse tipo de substância — seja boa ou ruim — este álbum é, em partes talvez iguais, profundo e desconcertante, algo que se intensifica na sequência de três músicas antes da faixa título, que encerra esta epopeia. G, (O)rdinary e (D)eath (com destaque para as iniciais GOD que, em inglês, formam a palavra DEUS) refletem sobre religião, inteligência artificial e o próprio sentido da vida, invocando a vibe de artistas desde System of a Down e Mr. Bungle até Daft Punk e, no caso de (D)eath, se envereda inesperadamente pelo território do jazz, esbarrando até mesmo em Frank Sinatra no caminho.

Life Is But A Dream… é, no mínimo, indulgente. E como não seria? Muitos não terão coragem — ou vontade — de enfrentar essa jornada até o fim, e é difícil prever como ele vai se encaixar com os outros álbuns da banda, muito menos ser tocado ao vivo, mas o Avenged Sevenfold parece ter escalado uma montanha para apreciar a paisagem e, depois, mergulhado diretamente na imensidão do desconhecido, sem saber como ou onde esse delírio acabaria.

E que tipo de loucura é essa?

Uma que é impossível resistir.
