Depois de ter seguido um caminho nada comercial em The Stage (2016), o Avenged Sevenfold conseguiu ir além em seu novo álbum de estúdio, Life is but a Dream…. A banda, que sempre experimentou estilos diferentes a cada álbum, tomou a acertada decisão de compor as músicas que queriam, do jeito que queriam, sem se importar com sucesso de vendas ou nostalgia dos fãs.
Se o quinteto já tinha adotado o metal progressivo em algumas músicas do City of Evil (The Wicked End, Strength of the World, M.I.A.), em Save Me do Nightmare e composto um álbum inteiro nessa pegada (The Stage), aqui o buraco é mais embaixo: os tempos das músicas são ainda mais quebrados, as transições são abruptas, indo do peso a calmaria em um segundo; as estruturas das canções são ainda menos convencionais e o experimentalismo é a regra: seja com Shadows explorando diversas tonalidades vocais e brincando com efeitos na voz na edição, ou no instrumental carregado de instrumentos de orquestra – que é a maior já usada em um disco do A7X.
Certamente não agradará aos fãs mais saudosistas da época do Nightmare ou quem prefere algo mais “palatável” como em Hail to the King, mas a banda já sabia disso. Se fosse para entrar em estúdio e gravar a “parte 2” de qualquer um dos seus antigos trabalhos, o grupo estaria saindo de sua essência que é a mudança. M. Shadows até já disse que não sabe se teremos mais um álbum depois desse, apenas se tiverem algo a dizer. O Avenged já é uma das mais bandas mais bem estabelecidas do metal, e sua posição permite lançar projetos ousados como esse.
Ainda há muito o que digerir desse novo trabalho. Prestar atenção nos detalhes, em tudo que acontece de fundo e não é percebido nas primeiras vezes que ouvimos e focamos nossa atenção nos vocais, guitarras e bateria. Gostemos ou não do que foi feito, afinal somos livres em nossos gostos pessoais, Life is But a Dream… renova o mercado do rock e principalmente do metal, que vem sendo saturado com bandas que soam todas iguais.
